Not all teen-aged drug addicts come from low socio-economic and broken homes. Some come from normal, middle-class families. The teens experiment with drugs just to see what it’s like and before they realize it they are addicted. They try and keep it a secret from their parents. Things escalate out of control as they struggle to get money to pay for their habit and they land in a juvenile detention center. Their secret is out and you as the parent now has to decide how to get your teen rehabilitated.
If this has happened to you, don’t get discouraged. There are many effective drug rehabilitation centers that will work with your teen. And that’s the problem. There are so many to choose from how can you decide which one is best for your child?
The first thing you should find out from a drug rehab center is whether or not it accepts your insurance. Some insurance companies will provide some help in paying for drug rehabilitation. Make sure the treatment center accepts your insurance if it pays for rehabilitation.
The next thing is to consider how far away the center is from your home. Your teen’s recovery will be higher if he is not close to the bad influences that started him taking drugs in the first place. However, you do want it close enough that you can visit when the treatment center allows family visitation rights.
Then, find out how long the average stay is for the facility. Find out their philosophy and mission statement to see if you agree with their philosophy. Does your teen need to go through detoxification? If so, does the rehab center take people through it? See how the center involves families in the rehabilitation process.
If at all possible, visit the center so that you can see what the facilities are like. Ask if the staff is certified. If possible, see how they interact with clients. You want to make sure they are professional yet caring in their interaction with them.
