Drugs, both illegal and prescription, can be dangerously addictive. Those who become addicted to drugs often let the drug overtake their lives. It’s a scary place where someone feels trapped, alone, and entirely desperate. For those around the addict, it may be difficult to know if someone is addicted to drugs. In order to help those you love, you must first learn to recognize the signs of drug addiction.
1. Problems at school. If someone starts missing classes or suddenly doing very poorly in class, it could be a drug problem.
2. Lack of energy. Those addicted to drugs often have a sudden lack of energy. If a normally energetic person suddenly has no energy, there is cause for concern.
3. Withdrawn. Most people crave a little bit of privacy, but if you notice your loved one always wants to be alone or never associates with other people, take note and watch for other signs of drug abuse.
4. Money issues. If someone suddenly has a lot of money or is frequently out of money, this is also cause for concern.
Remember, most of these symptoms can also be signs for other problems. For instance, someone who is suddenly withdrawn may actually be depressed. Or someone who is normally energetic appears to have no energy, it could be a health problem. But, just because these signs have other causes as well, it doesn’t mean you should ignore or dismiss the possibility of a drug problem.
The most important thing to do is watch your loved one and carefully observe his behavior. You can be there to offer love and support if there is a problem. Talk about your concerns and make sure your loved one knows there are people that love and care about his well being. An addict needs love and attention now more than ever, so make sure you don’t give up on your loved ones.
