One of the scariest part of coming out of rehab or a recovery process is the thought of relapse. In fact, relapse can almost seem like a dirty word to a recovering addict. One way to avoid relapse is to have a support system around you. Surrounding yourself with people who love and care about you is a great way to avoid slipping up and relapsing after your recovery.
A support group will love you unconditionally. Even if you do slip up and take one drink or puff a cigarette, your support group will still love you. Go to them, admit your mistake, and then move forward. The amazing thing about a support group is that they want the best for you, so no matter what choice you make, they will be there to help you recover.
When you feel like relapsing, go immediately to your support group. These are the people who will talk you out of drinking or taking drugs. They will go with you to a safe place and stay with you until the urge to relapse is over. Your first option should always be to go to your support group.
Most importantly, a support group reminds you that there are people who love and care about you. Often the worst part of addiction is the loneliness that occurs. A support group is a group of people you can spend time with, talk to, and have fun with. You are no longer controlled by your addiction and now you can go out and have fun the right way with people who love and care about you.
