Supporting an Addicted Family Member

Addiction to drugs and alcohol can be a difficult place to be in – especially if you are the family member of someone who is addicted. Sometimes, the ones we love make bad choices and choose drugs and alcohol over their family. While it can be difficult to love and support someone who is addicted to a substance, the absolute best thing for an addict to recover is family support. Below are some ways that you can support your addicted family members.

1.       Unconditional love. This is the tough one. Sometimes, it’s hard to love someone who is making choices you don’t agree with. But, the most important thing you can do at this point in time is love your family member no matter what.

2.       Don’t give up. Again, it might be difficult to not lose hope when you watch your loved one relapse, but you cannot give up. Continue to love and fight for your loved one to be healthy.

3.       Seek professional help. Sometimes, the only thing that can help an addict is professional help. Seek out a good rehab center or addiction counselor for the right kind of help. There are professionals trained to help people overcome addiction. Use their expertise.

4.       Get your own support. You’re going to need very supportive friends and family to help you through this time. You’re going to need someone to vent to and lean on when times get tough. Be sure you seek out your own support group. You may even be able to find an organized group of other people helping family members with addiction.
